MARY REICHARD, HOST: If your idea of conspicuous consumption includes thousand-dollar-a-dozen doughnuts, I know just the place. On Miami’s South Beach, you can find the premium pastry of the tippy-top of the one percent.
Chef Björn Delacruz opened a new shop dedicated to sybaritic confection lovers. He calls it the Gold Cristal Ube Donut.
A reporter from Business Insider got her hands on one, and the gold part — it’s literally gold.
AUDIO: Whooooooa! It’s so shiny!
The base is made of sweet purple yam from the Philippines. That’s the ube part.
Then the pastry chef covers it with Cristal champagne icing. Followed by an airbrush of edible gold and finished off with six to nine sheets of gold leaf, if you can imagine.
The finished product looks like oversized jewelry from a Tiffany’s display case.
Well-heeled customers say they are delicious.
Of course they do. You think someone’s going to drop a Benjamin on a single doughnut and say it was just “meh”?
It’s The World and Everything in It.
