MARY REICHARD, HOST: Little Iziah Hall was playing with a cell phone at his grandmother’s house near Grand Rapids, Michigan. And, as five year olds go, he did what five year olds do. He got hungry.
Grandma was sleeping and he didn’t want to wake her. So he decided to order in, calling the only number he knew by heart. Three simple digits.
AUDIO: Kent County 911, what’s your emergency? Can you bring me McDonald’s? I’m sorry, what? Can you bring me McDonald’s? No, I can’t bring you McDonald’s.
Police officer Dan Patterson got the call from dispatch to check up on little Iziah but made a stop on the way.
PATTERSON: You know, so I figured, hey I’m driving past McDonald’s on the way there. I might as well get him something.
Grandma was still asleep when Iziah greeted officer Patterson … but by then he was having second thoughts.
PATTERSON: I think the first thing he said to me was my grandma’s gonna be so mad. Can you please go away? (laughs)
Patterson and Iziah’s grandma sat him down and explained when it’s appropriate to call 911, and when it’s not. But no one was angry and he got his McDonald’s craving satisfied.
So this story has a happy ending. Well, maybe a Happy Meal ending.
