
MARY REICHARD, HOST: They say cats have nine lives, but these outlive them all.
For decades now, novelty telephones made in the shape of the cartoon cat Garfield have been washing ashore on France’s Brittany coast.

She’s describing one of these phones that had gotten stuck in the mud. Only the French can make that sound elegant. But I digress.
Beachgoers have been coming across these things since the 1980s. And some anti-litter volunteers recently figured out why.
35 years ago, a lost shipping container broke open inside a sea cave that’s accessible only during low tide.
Still, the container remains out of reach and that means Garfield will continue to turn up on French coasts until, apparently, his lives run out.
