Kicker: A very overdue library book

MEGAN BASHAM, HOST: Most of us have returned a library book a bit late.

But a man in California took that a bit further. Well, a lot further.

Patrick Powers returned an overdue cookbook he checked out. Forty-seven years ago! In Hawaii.

He forgot all about the retro book with a cloth cover for years. And then after he moved to California, he found it. He told Hawaii News Now:

POWERS: It’s not my book. I need to return it to the library.

Powers had a long career in the hospitality business, and that book?

POWERS: I don’t want to say this book caused it, but it’s like one of those steps. Go to the library. Check this book out. Return it, though.

So while on vacation in Hawaii, he hand-delivered the overdue book and a brand new replacement.

The librarian was impressed by the man’s commitment. And although Powers said he was expecting a heavy fine, the librarian said… no charge.

It’s The World and Everything in It.
